Starting out your own business can be daunting, the challenges and risks that come with running a business can impact your well being. It can be hard to find a work life balance but it's important to step away from your work otherwise you can end up burnt out which can also affect your productivity. This is why it is important to make sure to avoid negatively impacting your mental and emotional well being.

Here are 5 ways to boost your well being

Be Physically Active

Staying active is not only good for your physical health but it is also good for your mental health. It has been known to help to relieve feelings of stress and increase self-esteem.

This doesn't mean you need to have an intense workout, it could simply be having a walk and encouraging some social interaction.

Here are few ideas to start getting physical:

  • Having a walk on your lunch break
  • Take the stairs not the lift

Connect with others

It is important to have meaningful relationships as they are good for your mental well being. Feeling valued by other people is a foundational human need which contributes to functioning well in the world.

Relationships can help provide emotional support as well as being there for someone else and it gives you the opportunity to share both positive and negative experiences with someone.

Learn a new skill

Continuing to learn throughout life helps boost your self esteem, confidence and helps to connect with new people. Putting energy towards learning a new skill allows your mind to focus on goal setting which is strongly associated with higher levels of well being.

Make leisure a priority

It's compulsory to take time out and spend time doing things you enjoy for your emotional and mental well being. Create a list of hobbies and relaxing activities you like to do, then when you feel like your mood needs a boost, take an activity off the list and spend some time doing it.

Give to others

Studies show that acts of kindness and giving to others helps boost your mental well being. Those who show interest in their community and helping out are more likely to rate themselves happy. A good way to give back to your community is volunteering, this will give you a feeling of purpose, self worth and connect with others who are interested in the same volunteering project as you.
